Team RealMac is named after both an electronic magazine called 'RealMac Magazine' that began distribution in 1997 and a nickname the team leader happens to use from time to time.

We're interested in distributed computing, something which entails running a program on your computer either as you're doing other things on it, or as a screen saver (a la Seti@Home). With distributed computing, your system forms part of a larger system. In order to do this, different pieces or workloads, must be distributed and if the Internet is the primary means of data transmission, a system put in place in the event that a computer is unable to interact with the hub.

Though there are a variety of different distributed computing challenges to participate in, at this time, we've decided to stick with those sponsored by distributed.net. This is mostly due to the efficiency of the programs the folks at distributed.net produce and the wide range of systems they run on. Other projects don't have clients for the Mac or specific unix platforms for example.
